Your basic 1" thick return filter has one job. Protect the equipment from debris. Anything past that is not effective. Some filter brands advertise to handle mold, allergens etc., these filters are so restrictive to airflow, they can almost do more harm than good. For better filtration, a whole home media filtration device will need to be installed in your duct work or directly at the equipment itself.

What is a MERV rating?

MERV rating is simply a measurement of how well a filter does. The higher the MERV rating the smaller particles it can capture.
